Forest Skills is an interactive course working in a wooded area within the Wentworth Castle estate. This course is designed to build on the work of Forest Confidence and support you in the continued development of your confidence and skills for further study here in college.
- develop your ability to work in a team
- explore the theory of fire
- light a small contained fire
- learn how to use a Kelly kettle safely
You will also learn how to risk assess to keep yourself and others safe, linking theory and outdoor learning together.
The course enables you to reflect on your own learning, set daily targets and review your learning regularly. The personal skills that you will develop include enhanced communication skills, problem solving and team skills which are all transferable into further study, voluntary work or paid employment.
This is a foundation course for those returning to learning who wish to explore what Northern College has to offer.
How will the course be delivered?
The course will be delivered on a residential basis, over two days and one night. The course will include a blend of classroom based activities and some individual work alone.
Northern College starts where you are, building on your life skills and experience. You don’t need a formal qualification to begin your studies with us.
Students must bring their own waterproof coats and boots or wellingtons as this is an outdoor course. Personal clothing must be appropriate for the time of year.

Funding Support Statement:
You may be eligible to study for free if you are unemployed, on certain benefits, or earn £17,004 a year or less. We can confirm when you apply or contact our Student Support Services team to learn more.

Please note the fee displayed is for the tuition fee only. If you are staying overnight at the college and you are not eligible for residential funding, there will be an additional charge to cover bed, breakfast and evening meal.
