Access to Higher Education in Policing and Criminology

Course Description:

If you would like to study Policing or Criminology at university but left school without the qualifications you need, then this Access to HE course could be for you!

This Level 3 qualification is designed for adults interested in undertaking a career in Law and Criminology, the Police authorities, Probation and Prison Service fields, Youth Justice, Victim Support or other related Psychology and Social Policy fields.

The course covers a range of subjects and specialisms relevant to Policing, Law and Criminology. Modules include:

  • The Powers of the Police
  • Law and Morality
  • Crime and Deviance
  • Psychology – Conformity and Obedience
  • Psychology – Aggression
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

 

You will also complete a range of study skills modules and an independent research project to successfully develop the skills required for higher education.

 

Entry Requirements:

 

If you haven't been in education for some time or didn't gain any formal qualifications at school or college, don't worry. Whilst you won't need to have GCSE Maths and/or English to get onto this course, you might need them to apply for the university course of your choice (so please check this out). We may be able to offer you the opportunity to study GCSE Maths alongside your Access to HE course and will talk to you about this at one of our Admissions Days. There is no upper age limit for this course as we believe everyone should have the chance to achieve their ambitions, but you do need to be 19 or over to apply.

Once you have submitted an application online, we will send you a form to provide some additional information and a workbook of initial assessment tasks.These need to be completed and returned to studentservice@northern.ac.uk.Once we receive your work we will be in touch to arrange an informal interview, this can be on site or via Zoom.

How will the course be delivered?

This course is delivered over two semesters and will require students to be in college full time 3 days per week. The remaining 2 days should be used as independent study days to work on assignments.

Course Costs and Funding
