The Access to Higher Education (HE) course at Northern College is a fast track to university that will give you the knowledge, skills and qualification you need to apply for university in just 9 months! You don’t necessarily need any prior qualifications to apply for this course and most of our students have been out of education for some time. What you do need is the determination to succeed and a willingness to work hard for 9 months.

Our Access to HE course is highly regarded by local and national universities and enables you to develop the skills you will require for university.

Entry Requirements

Access to HE courses are designed for those who would like to progress to university but don’t have the qualifications required.  You will need to have achieved English at GCSE grade 4 (C) or Functional Skills Level 2.  For study areas that are largely dependent upon maths skills, GCSE grade 4 (C) or Functional Skills Level 2 may also be required.

Successful applicants will be required to attend an interview day and some initial tasks which includes:

·         A literacy and/or numeracy assessment

·         A short research task

The purpose of these activities is to ensure that you are applying for the right course and will be able to cope with the demands of the course.

We can offer the opportunity to study either GCSE Maths or English alongside your Access to HE course for individuals that are ready and will discuss this with you during the Interview Day.

There is no upper age limit for this course as we believe everyone should have the chance to achieve their ambitions, but you do need to be 19+ to apply.

Is the course right for you?

Access to HE courses are demanding and you will need to be able to fully commit to your studies. Before applying, please consider the following questions:

·         Will you be able to commit to the time required for your studies? The course is full-time, over 8 months and you will be required to be in college throughout the week. In addition, you will need to complete an additional 15 hours per week independent study outside of the timetabled sessions.

·         Can you manage your time effectively? You will be studying a number of modules at the same time and will need to do reading and assignments for each of these throughout the course.
